Functional Rehabilitation

Functional Rehabilitation Services in Cumbria

Expert recovery support beyond physiotherapy

My specialised functional rehabilitation services are designed to help you restore movement, rebuild confidence, and return to everyday life – whether you're recovering from an injury, managing a chronic health condition, or facing long-term physical challenges.

This service goes beyond standard physiotherapy and is tailored to support people with more complex or ongoing rehabilitation needs.

I offer community-based functional rehabilitation in Cockermouth, Wigton and across Cumbria, with sessions delivered in clinic, at home, in the pool or outdoors, depending on what works best for you.

What is functional rehabilitation?

"A personalised recovery plan to help you rebuild strength, confidence and everyday function"

Functional rehabilitation is a patient-centred approach to recovery that focuses on improving overall function and long-term wellbeing, rather than just targeting specific symptoms or injuries.

Its goal is to restore optimal performance and function after an injury, supporting clients to return, as far as possible, to their previous level of participation in daily activities.

My functional rehab service is designed to support people with complex injuries or conditions that affect more than one area of the body, or where standard physiotherapy alone may not be enough. This service looks at the bigger picture to help you regain independence and achieve realistic and meaningful goals at home, at work, or during leisure.

You might be returning to work, rebuilding confidence after an accident, or learning to adapt following amputation or surgery. Whatever your goals, we’ll work together to create a plan that fits your life, pace and priorities.

Who is functional rehab for?

Functional rehabilitation can be particularly helpful if you’re recovering from:

  • Serious injury or surgery
  • Multiple injuries (polytrauma)
  • Chronic pain or long-term health conditions
  • Amputation
  • Burns
  • Work-related injuries or physical limitations

It’s also suitable if standard physiotherapy alone isn’t enough, or if you need a more flexible, realistic rehab plan that fits into your daily life.

If you're struggling to regain your previous level of function or feel stuck in your recovery, functional rehabilitation could be the key to lasting progress.

How rehabilitation works

While traditional physiotherapy and functional rehab can overlap, functional rehab is often more intensive, longer in duration, and addresses more complex and varied needs.

Ultimately, functional rehabilitation is about more than just recovery; it's about helping you regain confidence, capability, and control in your life.

Together, we understand your goals, identify the barriers, and build a recovery plan that helps you return to doing the things you want. That might be walking your dog, getting back to work, playing sports, or managing daily life with more confidence and less pain.

My functional rehabilitation services are:

  • Holistic: We look at the whole picture, addressing the physical, psychological, and lifestyle factors affecting your recovery.

  • Highly personalised: Every treatment plan is tailored to your unique goals, needs, and environment.

  • Goal-oriented: Whether you're returning to work, sport, or managing chronic pain, I’ll help you build the strength and confidence to get there.

  • Community-based: Sessions can take place in the clinic, your home, a gym, pool, or outdoor setting – wherever is convenient and most effective for your recovery journey.

My approach to functional rehabilitation

Every rehabilitation plan is built around you: your goals, your challenges, and your day-to-day reality. I take the time to understand what’s getting in the way of your progress and what will help you move forward in a way that’s sustainable.

Here’s how I typically support clients through functional rehab:

  • Functional Capacity Assessments: Evaluate your current physical abilities and limitations

  • Patient-Reported Outcome Measures: Track your progress based on your own experience

  • Occupational & Recreational Goal Setting: Align recovery goals with your work and lifestyle

  • Barrier Identification & Support: Uncover and address what's holding you back

  • Community-Based Rehab Programmes: Realistic, practical sessions in everyday environments

Collaborative support for case managers and clients

I regularly work with case managers, legal teams and individual clients to deliver evidence-based, results-driven rehabilitation programmes.

From initial assessments to goal setting and implementation, I provide clear communication and measurable outcomes at every stage.

Whether you need a one-off Functional Capacity Assessment, a home visit, or an ongoing rehab plan, I offer flexible, responsive support that’s tailored to you.

TESTIMONIALS

"Sarah helped my husband with his recovery after a serious accident. She has a wealth of information and worked at building programs and plans to benefit his individual needs. Being told he would never run again, Sarah worked with him to help him achieve this goal. She has a kind and supportive approach and we are very grateful we found her. We could not recommend Sarah highly enough."

"After an operation on my knee in 2018, I required physiotherapy so approached Liz Hunter Physiotherapy where I was introduced to Sarah Lord. This proved to be a good choice and Sarah gave me exercises and instruction during weekly appointments to improve the strength and mobility of both knees, which also suffer from osteoarthritis.

I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2019 and continued my appointments with Sarah (in the clinic and the hydrotherapy pool) in order to improve my balance and posture as well as strengthening the knee joints.

If I have to miss a session, it is quite noticeable and I believe that Sarah’s expertise is keeping me mobile.

Sarah has a vast knowledge of her profession which she applies with appropriate challenge but also with empathy and humour. Altogether this enables me to maintain a good standard of mobility and balance thus contributing to enjoying life."
